Say hello to Dan #2

We’ve just taken on our second Dan, who joined the aTech family a few weeks ago. Dan (Quinney) is joining us as a backend software developer and will be working on improving a number of our existing products as well as working directly with customers on the support side of things.

He’s already got stuck in working on the new Sirportly WHMCS module and is now furiously working away at creating import tools for it too!

If you need support with any of our products, you’ll probably be hearing from him soon!

Barcamp Bournemouth 4

This year we were lucky enough to be to sponsor Bournemouth’s premier unconference, Barcamp Bournemouth 4 along with Mozilla, Bournemouth University and the BCS. If you’re not familiar with the barcamps, barcamplondon.org describes them as:

…a “participatory unconference”, so you, the attendees are going to be making the event as great as it can be. The idea is that everyone who comes takes part in some way: that might be running a session (which is not as scary as you might think), taking photos, blogging, tweeting etc.

In short, it’s a conference that anyone can attend, and anyone can give a talk on, with no advance notice. Talks can be on anything, but the events tend to attract a geeky crowd due to the online nature of the event organisation. Talks at this years event included:

  • Introduction to the Gamepad API (by @rawkes)
  • The failure swapshop – where people share their stories of failure (by @alukeonlife)
  • Stop dreading talking to people. About stuff. (by @alightheart)
  • What makes Beer Good? – my personal favourite (by @sesquey)
  • Ultimate Frisbee (by @tazr42)

Barcamp Bournemouth 4 - Ultimate Frisbee Workshop

As well as these talks, @adamcooke and I gave an introductory talk to Rails, “Build a web app in 40 minutes with Rails” where we introduced the basic concepts of Rails, demonstrated how to use the scaffolding and extend models.

Barcamp Bournemouth 4 - Ruby workshop

In addition to giving and attending talks, we got to meet some of our awesome existing customers and hopefully found a few new ones as well!

Following on from the success of Barcamp Bournemouth 4, we’ll be sponsoring Barcamp Canterbury 2 on the 28th and 29th April. Adam and I will be attending again, so we hope to see some of you there!

The Ruby Game

Today has been a day to down tools on our usual projects and spent the day writing a little game for Ruby developers to help share and test the fastest ways to write codes to solve common (and in some weeks, uncommon) problems.

Each week we will post a “challenge” and users are required to write some pure Ruby code to solve the task. We then test the code to ensure it solves our original problem and run it running thousands of times and display the results on the scoreboard.

The development of this project has involved writing a quick app to capture the submissions (including some syntax highlighting) and writing a sandbox environment to run submissions within.

As far as hosting goes, we’re hosting this on our new application hosting infrastructure, Appli. Next week we may well look at adding a dedicated physical box to run the tests to ensure consistency between test runs.

More details can be found on the website at therubygame.com.

Welcome to our new blog

As a small and busy company, we’ve always struggled with keeping our blog up to date and over the last 18 months we haven’t updated it nearly enough. It’s now time for that to change. In the past we have had a number of blogs spread across all our sites (one for Codebase, one for Deploy etc…) but we’ve now consolidated everything into a single site at blog.atechmedia.com.

The new blog, like so many, is powered by WordPress. We found the admin interface behind WordPress to be very nice to use and the nicer the system, more likely we are to write posts and keep things up to date.

I’d encourage you to subscribe to our new RSS feed and we promise to keep things you informed with all our latest news & tips and tricks. This blog will also serve, along with our status site, as the primary location for any updates related to our service status and scheduled maintenance.

We’ve moved to Bournemouth

After a bit of instability relating to our physical location, we’ve now settled down nicely in a new office in Bournemouth, Dorset. We’re currently located on the 8th floor of a modern and friendly office building within easy reach of Subway, Dominos and Pizza Express!

One of the best things about our new office is that the datacentre we use to host all our applications is located within the same building. The C4L Bournemouth data centre provides us with a reliable home for all our servers with multiple 10 gigabit uplinks back to London and fully redundant power and temperature control. If we ever need physical access to our infrastructure, it’s just a 6 floor lift ride away from our office!

Christmas Newsletter 2010

Welcome to our end of year newsletter! We don’t often send our newsletters, but as it’s the end of the year we wanted to take the opportunity to announce a few new things and send out a few important admin notices.

The last 12 months has gone extremely fast, we’ve done so many different things, including:

  • We launched Deploy back in August which has received lots of support from our users (don’t forget, Codebase users get a free account so why not check it out, if you haven’t already).
  • Back in March, we migrated all our services to brand new hardware up in Manchester with Melboure Server Hosting.
  • Published our first 16 page Codebase Getting Started booklet with lots of information for new Codebase users.
  • Headed up to London where we sponsored the Future of Web Apps conference to show off both Codebase & Deploy.
  • Deployed our new management application which now handles all our billing & support from one central interface – our team are now handling over 25 support queries every day!
  • Committed over 15,000 commits to our numerous repositories – that’s a lot when you consider we’re only a team of 4.
  • Moved out into the middle of nowhere to our new office, although we’re rapidly outgrowing it already!
  • …and finally, we’ve deployed loads of new features & improvements to all our applications, most noticeably within Codebase.

All that is now in the past and it’s time to look to the future. Take a look at the rest of the newsletter to see what we’ve got in store for you in 2011!

Future of Web Apps – London 2010

We’re here in London on the second day of the Future of Web Apps conference surrounded by large companies like Microsoft, Yahoo, Paypal and Vodafone. We had an excellent day yesterday and spoke to many new people who had never heard about us as well as a few familiar faces and existing Codebase users who were only too happy to enter our competition and grab some free pens & stickers.

If you’re here today, stop by and have a chat (we have sweets!). You could also take a look at our flickr photos to see what we’ve been up to.

New Billing System Live

9 weeks ago we started the initial work on developing a new billing system, Sum, and after some sporadic development, we’re very pleased to announce that we’ve just deployed the finished product and moved all Codebase billing over to it.

The change is mostly for our benefit as it gives the flexibility to generate reports for all our applications from one interface as well as monitoring our financials in real time.

If you already have added your payment card & address to your Codebase account, it’s unlikely you’ll even notice the change. Having said that, the new system does introduce some new features which account owners will be able to take advantage of:

PDF invoices – you can download PDF invoices for any invoice raised on your account (including ones generated before we moved). We’ve also included a URL in your invoice notification email allowing you to download it.

Pay for your Codebase subscription on a quarterly, biannual or annual basis in addition to the default monthly timescale. If you decide not to pay monthly, you can settle your invoices using Paypal directly from the new system.

In the next few weeks we’ll be allowing companies from the EU to apply for VAT-free billing which allows you to receive your Codebase subscription without VAT included by default.
